Maher new Tipp skipper

Brendan Maher has been named as the new Tipperary hurling captain for 2014, WRITES COLM KEYS.

Maher takes over from Shane McGrath having been vice-captain this year in Eamon O'Shea's side.

Noel McGrath, who was part of the Loughmore Castleiney team that captured Tipperary SHC title recently, will act as Maher's deputy for the forthcoming campaign.

Maher made his debut for the Premier men in 2009 and won an All Star and the Young Hurler of the Year award the following season.

Meanwhile, Leinster Council's Competition Controls Committee are expected to look into the ill-tempered finish to Sunday's Leinster club SFC first- round match between Newtown Blues and Tullamore.

Wicklow referee Anthony Nolan had to be escorted off the field in Drogheda when he incurred the wrath of the visiting support.

Nolan had sent off two Tullamore players during the course of the game. According to eyewitnesses, an object was thrown in his direction as he came off the field.
