London show mettle to topple Mayo
Christy Ring cup holders London were a step above Mayo in the physical stakes in this gripping encounter at MacHale Park, Castlebar.
Mayo found it very hard to break down a resolute London defence, managing just two scores from play over the 70 minutes.
Two first-half goals by Luke Hands and Martin Duggan – the second gifted by Mayo goalkeeper Donal O'Brien – gave London a solid half-time platform of 2-7 to 0-8.
Evan Regan and Kenny Feeney were keeping Mayo in touch, with all but one of their scores coming from frees, four from Regan.
A poor second half saw London add a third goal on 40 minutes from Tony Dunne to seal a hard-fought win. Feeney's long-range free that ended up in the net with 15 minutes left proved a mere consolation for Mayo.
