Limerick punished as McInerney grabs a brace

Clare 2-7 Limerick 0-10

Senior hurler Cathal McInerney gave a five-star performance when helping his county U-21 footballers to victory over wasteful Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds last night.

They reversed last year's extra-time defeat thanks mainly to two goals by McInerney, one in each half.

Limerick finished with 14 players when Ian Corbett was shown a straight red near the end for a clumsy tackle as his side stormed the Clare goal in an effort to force extra-time.

Limerick had the first point inside the opening 60 seconds, but it was 0-3 apiece after 13 minutes and then came the superbly taken Clare goal scored by McInerney .

McInery followed with a point and wing back Stephen Tierney moved upfield for his second point of the half to increase the lead to 1-5 to 0-3. Eoghan O'Connor and James Lee had Limerick points to leave a goal between them at the break. But McInerney's second goal after 52 minutes decided the outcome.
