Last-gasp Coone saves NUIG

UCD 0-17
NUig 2-11

Finian Coone converted a free deep into injury-time to give NUI Galway a deserved draw against UCD in an absorbing encounter at Belfield.

Having trailed for most of the second-half, UCD looked to have sneaked victory through a Liam Rushe free in added time but from the resultant puck-out, UCD's Maurice Nolan was alleged to have fouled the ball and Coone did the necessary from 40 metres.

Inspired by David Kenny at full-back, UCD led by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break, with Dublin's David O'Callaghan in fine form, scoring three points from play. However, NUIG stayed in touch through frees from Coone and two long-range points from midfielder John Lee.

The visitors took control in the second-half and Coone struck from a 20-metre free for the game's opening goal on 37 minutes. This was soon followed up by a superb goal from substitute Caimin Morey to give the Galway college a four-point lead.

However, poor shot selection on NUIG's behalf which culminated in a series of wides allied to ill-discipline led to three Rushe pointed frees in succession and it seemed that UCD may have got out of jail prior to Coone's late intervention. Both sides must now content themselves with joint top spot in the group.
