Two senior Laois officials are heading up the investigation into the assault on a referee and an umpire after a Laois intermediate hurling semi-final last weekend.

The Laois CCC met on Monday evening where they received referee Liam Moran's report with his version of events after Ballyfin's injury-time victory over Clonaslee/St Manman's.

It is understood the report contains up to 12 names, including those prominently involved.

A goal seven minutes into injury-time gave Ballyfin a 1-13 to 1-11 victory and prompted anger among the Clonaslee ranks.

Players and supporters focused their anger on the referee and the umpire who allowed a goal, which Clonaslee felt had not crossed the line.

Kieran Delaney, chairman of the county's hurling committee and Niall Handy, the county's secretary, will lead the investigation.

The umpire who was the focus of the assault is the outgoing Laois minor hurling manager Tony Ryan.

Clonaslee/St Manman's have been in trouble on several occasions in recent years and are due to pay a €1,000 fine for a recent incident. Earlier this year, they lost home advantage for all senior games for the second time for a separate incident in which a young player from an opposing team was assaulted.

In the latest incident, gardai were called to O'Moore Park and are believed to have spoken to at least one Clonaslee/St Manman's player.

Meanwhile, Brendan Fennelly was ratified as Laois hurling manager on Monday night. Fennelly has a decorated CV in Kilkenny and Waterford and is currently in charge of the Carrickshock team that has reached the Kilkenny semi-finals.
