Kehoe leads Carlow fightback

Carlow 3-11
Down 3-9

Two goals and a point in a two-minute spell after half time were the scores which set up Carlow for this narrow victory over Down in Mitchel Park, Ballygalget, yesterday.

Down, playing with a strong breeze in the first half, took a long time to get into the game and trailed by 1-2 to 0-3 after 15 minutes, with Paudie Kehoe, Carlow's prolific scorer, getting their goal after seven minutes.

The Down fightback started with a goal from a free by Gareth Johnson and when Simon Wilson set up Conor O'Prey for another goal the Mournemen took the lead with three minutes of the half left.

A long-range free by Simon Wilson, who was Down's top scorer, went all the way to the net as Down led by 3-6 to 1-5 at the interval.

After missing two good chances at the start of the second half Carlow eventually found their scoring range. Kehoe pointed a free and with 10 minutes gone he finished a long-range free by Robert Coady to the net. Carlow then struck for another goal when Andrew Gaule found the net to level the game.

Carlow finished the stronger with a point from Robert Foley and a free by substitute Shane Kavanagh for a deserved victory.
