A RECENT column in these pages by Colm O'Rourke made reference to former Wexford minor hurling manager Eddie Walsh, who has written the following reply:

Dear Colm,

I wish to write to you re the article on 'burnout' which appeared in the edition of the Sunday Independent Sports Section on Sunday 23rd February 2014.

From the outset, I wish to say that I totally agree with all your sentiments around the topic, but when I got to the end of the article I was shocked and astounded when you said "the only county I have ever heard of to take action was the Wexford County Board who removed their minor manager".

I was that manager who you refer to, and I was not removed. I resigned and my resignation was accepted by the Wexford County Board. It had nothing to do with the burnout issue – I was caught up in internal politics.

Colm, if you knew me or if you had checked my background in coaching, especially at under age, this article would never have made any reference to me. I am one of the best and most caring coaches in Wexford and my record speaks for itself.

My mantra in coaching before we even strike a ball is to talk to young guys about their education, how to behave themselves and how to manage their time, not too many training sessions i.e. let the coaches know what their schedule is so that the training can be tailored, so my name could certainly not be put in any sentence to do with 'burnout', in my opinion.

Colm, the minutes of a Management meeting held on February 18th stated, and I quote, "emphatically advised that nobody accused Eddie Walsh of player 'burnout'".

Colm, I have to defend my good name, my record speaks for itself here in this great County of Purple and Gold. I have played Minor and under 21 football for Wexford. I have won hurling medals, Leinster Minor, under 21, Senior, three Oireachtas medals and was nominated for an All Star.

I have coached at under 14 and under 15 county for the past 10 years, all hurling, winning the Tony Forristal and two under 15 Leinster titles.

All this without one blemish on my record.

Eddie Walsh,

Faythe Harriers,

Pembrokestown,

Wexford
