Michael Fennelly got his inter- county management career off to a promising start as Laois denied an under-strength UCD side at Rathdowney.
Willie Hyland once again proved to be their most important player, hitting 11 points. The visitors piled on the pressure but Matthew Whelan and Brian Smyth were excellent in defence for Laois.

DIT right full-forward Paul Ryan had a field day, scoring 1-12 as the students eased past Carlow at Dr Cullen Park. In a game devoid of atmosphere, the Ballyboden-St Enda's player's scoring feat was the most notable feat -- 1-5 of his tally coming from play.

An excellent display of point taking in the second half enabled NUI Galway to overcome Offaly. An experimental Faithful side did well in the first half and led by 1-8 to 0-6 at half-time, but NUIG took complete control in the second half and outscored Offaly by 0-16 to 0-2 in that period.

Antrim came from two points down midway through the second half to defeat Westmeath by four points in Lakepoint Park, Mullingar. Half-time substitute PJ O'Connell proved to be the hero for Antrim after he scored 1-4 in the final 12 minutes as the Saffrons sealed the victory.
