Herity makes Louth pay for ill-discipline
Sligo booked a place in the quarter-finals by getting the better of ill-disciplined Louth at Pearse Park on Saturday.
Despite Sligo building a seven-point advantage by half-time, Louth reduced the deficit to two thanks to an early second-half Shane Fennell goal, while a brace of points from wing-forward Diarmuid Murphy left things on a knife-edge.
However, Louth's lack of discipline proved costly. Sligo's free-taker Colin Herity punished the sloppy defence with a tally of 13 points, 11 from the placed ball.
Sligo grabbed the initiative in the opening minutes when centre-forward Mark Gordon flicked his shot into an open goal after a defensive error.
Louth's woes continued when Robert Molloy found the net to put Sligo six points up.
In the second half, Louth narrowed the margin briefly in the closing minutes but Sligo's full-forward Derek Horan made certain his side's victory, registering 1-1 in added time.
