Henry turns screw on Kildare

Derry 1-22 Kildare 2-18

Derry qualified for a semi-final berth with a one-point victory over a Kildare side that only really came to life when Paul Divilly scored a 60th-minute goal to reduce the margin to two points.

Derry kept the visitors at bay in the closing minutes, Divilly electing to take a point from a free in the final seconds rather than try to manufacture a winning goal.

Kildare got off to a flying start with a Mark Moloney goal in the opening minute, but once Derry captain Kevin Hinphy kicked a goal five minutes later, the home side turned the screw on Kildare.

On top at midfield were the youthful Derry pairing of Charles Gilmore and Sean McGuigan. Paddy Henry finished with 12 points (11 from placed balls) with Paddy Kelly weighing in with three superb long-range frees.

Derry led 1-11 to 1-9 at half-time, centre half-forward Moloney with 1-4 from play and Divilly (0-3) major contributors for Kildare.

Derry weathered a mini second-half revival from Kildare, but two points from Henry late on matched Kildare's late tally and they booked a place in the last four.
