Both of these teams will have to beat LIT in their second-round games if they are to advance to the quarter-finals after yesterday's draw.
The key score came nine minutes into the second half when a Cian Mac Giolla Bhride pass from out on the sideline found Liam Rushe lurking on the edge of the small square, and the Dublin forward gave stand-in WIT goalkeeper Liam Tierney no chance with a well executed shot to put UCD 1-8 to 0-8 ahead.
Timmy Hammersley was the game's top scorer, helping himself to all but five of WIT's 15 points.
The sides were level on eight occasions -- they went into the break at 0-6 each -- but it seemed that the home side, with the strong wind behind them after the interval, were going to seal the win.
The highlight of the game was a free struck on his own side's 65-metre line by UCD's Noel McGrath -- playing against the wind in the second half -- as he levelled matters at 0-8 apiece.
With Hammersley in fine form from placed balls and Ray McLoughney and Fintan O'Leary hitting points from play for the host side in the final 10 minutes, it looked as if the points were going to stay on Suir Side.
But a McGrath free and a point from the stick of the impressive Keith Hogan with two minutes to go, meant that it was honours even.
