Grey's accuracy inspires Dublin to comfortable stroll past Wexford
Dublin 0-16 Wexford 0-11 (Leinster MHC)
THERE was an impressive look about Dublin as they cruised to a comfortable victory over Wexford in this Leinster MHC round-robin game at Piercestown.
The foundation for this victory was laid in the opening 30 minutes. Dublin, playing into a strong wind, dominated the half and with wing-forward Sean Grey punishing every indiscretion in the home defence with three pointed frees, along with a point from play, to go alongside points from Chris Bennett, Donal Burke, Con O Ceallachain, they led 0-7 to 0-3 at the interval.
Wexford failed to score from play during that opening half, their scores coming through two Jake Firman frees and a Cathal Dunbar sideline cut.
Wexford started the second half with a Niall Hughes point inside 30 seconds, but by the end of the third quarter the Dubs led 0-11 to 0-6, through points from Bennett, Matthew Oliver, Rian McBride and a Grey free, while pointed Firman frees kept the home side in touch.
Wexford had their best patch of the game as Niall Hughes and Darragh Pepper reduced the deficit to 0-11 to 0-8. Grey (free) and sub Sam Kelly exchanged points before a further Firman pointed free left just two points separating the sides, 0-12 to 0-10, with eight minutes remaining.
But it was the Dubs who stepped up a gear in the closing eight minutes as they finished with two Grey frees, along with an effort from Oliver and O Ceallachain, while the home side could only manage a Firman pointed free in between, leaving the Dubs the most comfortable of winners.
