Grant goal proves difference for Derry

Derry 3-13 DCU 2-13

A second-half goal from Alan Grant proved to be the decisive score for Derry but they were made to fight all the way by a battling DCU.

Derry took control early on as they opened the scoring through an Aaron Kelly goal.

The northerners dominated possession in the first quarter but their distribution of the ball was poor, squandering many scoring opportunities.

Tony French recorded four first-half frees for DCU, while Cathal Curran also converted two points from play to keep DCU in touch.

Derry recorded their second goal after DCU goalkeeper Padraic Burke lost control of the ball and Ruairi Convery pounced just before the half-time whistle to give Derry a 2-6 to 0-8 lead at the interval.

The second half saw an early resurgence from DCU, and Derry struggled to restrict them as Curran and Cillian Egan both netted to put them into the lead.

However, Derry didn't panic and Convery scored five second-half frees, while Grant got their third goal.

DCU rallied late on with points from Padraig Bulger and Aiden Treacy, but Derry held on to record an impressive victory.
