Give sides an equal chance

Cyril Farrell

I see that among the proposals for a revamped Allianz Hurling League is one which features a 12-team Division 1, broken into two groups, based on rankings (top six in 1A, next six in 1B).

It has a lot of merit but instead of confining the semi-finals to the four who finish in the top four in 1A, I would broaden the knockout stages. Allow the top two in 1A directly into the semi-finals and play two quarter-finals, featuring the next two in 1A against the top two in 1B.

It would give more teams a chance to win the title as well as providing two extra games. It worked before, so why not again?

And finally. . .

I must compliment Limerick for the wonderful work they have done in the Gaelic Grounds.

It's a lovely pitch, backed up by excellent facilities. It was in great shape for last Saturday's Limerick-Offaly/Cork-Galway double-header and deserves more big games.
