Galway trounce Antrim

GALWAY 3-29 ANTRIM 0-10 JOHN FALLON A FACILE match which does little for either county. As expected, Galway encountered few problems in seeing off a woeful Antrim side in this All-Ireland qualifier at Pearse Stadium.

Galway had hoped to be tested to some degree before facing Limerick next week, but the challenge never materialised from Dinny Cahill's men.

Galway did all that was required of them but they will not get carried away with the victory. Conor Hayes and his selectors will be rightly heart ened by the ruthless manner in which they tore Antrim to pieces, but he still doesn't know how they will handle a serious championship match.

For this to be any sort of meaningful game, Antrim needed to use the wind in the opening half but they turned around at half-time 12 points adrift.

The accuracy from placed balls by Ger Farragher was central to Galway easing their way to an interval lead of 2-13 to 0-7 despite playing against the wind. The Castlegar clubman pointed seven frees from a variety of positions in addition to a '65', as Galway sprayed the ball around with abandon. ~

The goals came from Niall Healy and the excellent David Tierney.

One of the highlights for Galway was also the impressive showing of corner-forward Damien Hayes. There was little reprieve for Antrim after the break with Tierney adding another goal in the 47th minute.

Galway boss Conor Hayes said he was just happy to get the win, but appreciated they would face a much sterner test against Limerick next week. "Antrim weren't great and I don't know the value of the win. But we did what we had to and will now turn our attentions to the Limerick match. That will be a big game for us," said Hayes.
