Joe Canning is expected back in training within the next two weeks, Galway manager John McIntyre has confirmed.

Canning has missed all four of Galway's league games to date because of an inflamed heel pad picked up in pre-season.

Galway have managed victories over Wexford, Offaly and Kilkenny without their chief marksman, who may return towards the latter stages of the league.

"We think Joe will be back in the next couple of weeks but we'll be guided by medical opinion on it," said McIntyre.

"Joe is anxious to come back, but the break he is getting now may suit him further down the road. Joe probably wouldn't agree with that because he'd play three games in a day if he could.

"He's been doing plenty of gym work and has kept up his fitness over the last six weeks.

"But the break is coming at a good time for him," acknowledged McIntyre, who is also expecting Kevin Hynes and Damien Hayes back in the coming weeks.

McIntyre is in Cheltenham this week as he is one of the syndicate that owns World Hurdle outsider Rigour Back Bob, which may take his chance on Thursday in the feature race.

Meanwhile, the CCCC may choose to view video footage of clashes in the tunnel in Pearse Stadium as the rival Galway and Kilkenny players made their way from the field at half-time on Sunday.

Players had to be separated just at the gates at the entrance to the dressing-room area.
