Gaffney fills Canning's scoring boots as Limerick secure home comforts with ease

LIMERICK IT 2-19
GALWAY-MAYO IT 1-11

WITH Joe Canning rested, Bernard Gaffney took over the role as scorer-in-chief as Limerick IT booked a home quarter-final with an 11-point win over a disappointing Galway-Mayo IT in Limerick.

Gaffney scored Limerick's first goal, blasting a 21-yard free into the net after only six minutes, and the game was more or less over as a contest four minutes later when Timmy Dalton scored their second.

It was all of 13 minutes before Ronan Madden scored GMIT's first point as the Limerick side led at the break by 2-10 to 0-5.

With Limerick IT's Seamus Callinan forced to retire at the break because of a hand injury, GMIT fared better in the second half and they might have made a game of it had Ciaran Flannery's penalty not been saved by Willie Hyland, at which stage the score stood at 2-15 to 1-10.
