Fitzgerald bids to up fringe benefits as Deise prevail

With Davy Fitzgerald allowing some of his more established stars to return late to training, his experimental Waterford side proved too strong for IT Tralee in this Waterford Crystal Cup game, played at the Austin Stack Park Tralee on Saturday afternoon.

Fitzgerald revealed that resting his senior players has caused no friction in the rest of the squad.

"The others lads are happy enough about it as they understand that it's for the overall good down the road," he said.

"If the boys are good enough when they come back, they will play; if the lads in possession (of the jersey) are good enough they will hold on to their places."

The sides were level at 0-3 apiece after 20 minutes with Gary Hurney from play and two Maurice Shanahan frees on the mark for Waterford, while Mikey Kiely with two frees and an Eoin Ryan effort kept Tralee in touch.

However, Waterford finished the half with a flourish. Shane Walsh blasted the ball to the Tralee net in the 24th minute and Shanahan sent over a flurry of frees to send them into the break 1-8 to 0-3 in front.

Martin O'Keeffe shot to the Tralee net four minutes after the restart and another pointed free from Shanahan pushed Waterford 12 points clear, but Tralee rallied and goals from Fergus Kennedy, Padraig O'Connor and Denis Crowley made the scoreline more respectable.
