Fennelly joy as Carrick' power past battling Erin's Own
New Laois hurling manager Brendan Fennelly won't be taking up his new job for a while because he has the little matter of a senior final with Carrickshock to attend to before he can go anywhere.
The southern outfit haven't appeared in a senior final in 59 years, but with county star Richie Power in flying form, they scored a battling victory over Erin's Own to win through to the decider.
The game was in the melting pot right to the finish and when Erin's Own chased a goal from a late free, only two players remained in the opposing half.
Power's haul of 12 points was crucial in such a tight match. Erin's Own exploded into life, and with a goal from a flying Martin Boran and points from Gordon Byrne and Peader Boran, they led by 1-2 to no score after six minutes.
Carrickshock were slow off the mark and they had to wait until the 11th minute for Power to open their account from a free.
Ten minutes later they got in front thanks to a goal from John Power, and they battled on to lead by 1-8 to 1-4 at half-time.
Erin's Own found themselves five points down within six minutes of the restart, but with Michael Murphy doing well in attack, they dragged themselves back. Turning into the last quarter, there was just a point between the team.
But Carrickshock, mainly thanks to the magnificence of Power and John Tennyson, held on for victory.
