IMPRESSIVE St Patrick's-Mater Dei were very convincing victors over a game but limited University Ulster Jordanstown yesterday.
Even against a stiff breeze in the first half, the Dubliners comfortably held the upper hand and when they led by 1-9 to 0-5 at the break, it was obvious that the match was as good as over.
Their goal was scored by their own goalkeeper, Eoin Reilly, who ran the length of the field -- a la Davy Fitzgerald -- and smashed an unstoppable penalty to the back of the UUJ net.
St Pat's-Mater Dei had a nicely balanced look about them all over the field and had several excellent performers on the day, but the two men who did the most damage were Kilkenny duo Liam Ryan at midfield and John-Joe Farrell at centre-forward.
UUJ just couldn't handle their clever movement or sleight of hand as the young Cats scored three points each in the first half and brought their tally to four apiece in the second period.
St Pat's-Mater Dei looked like they had another couple of gears in them for most of the game, and when they did go full throttle and really hurled hard -- which they did only in brief bursts -- they were very impressive.
Six unanswered points early in the second half put to bed any ambitions their Belfast hosts might have had about staging a comeback, and in the last five minutes of the match the visitors fired another unanswered barrage of 1-5 to put a gloss on the final scoreline.
They'll have a much sterner test of their Fitzgibbon Cup credentials next Wednesday when they travel to play GMIT.
