Farragher finds range
John McIntyre acknowledges that his Galway side have plenty of work to do, but he is confident they are heading in the right direction.
"If we had everything right in the middle of March with nothing left to learn for the rest of the league, then we'd be in trouble," he said after the Tribesmen got back on track at Pearse Stadium on Saturday.
They could have been caught had Offaly managed to convert several late goal chances, but after getting a serious wake-up call in Thurles the previous week, McIntyre was just relieved to win.
"The players were very determined to make a statement and for large tracts of the match they did," said McIntyre, who is not sure if the Portumna players, who lost their All-Ireland club title last Wednesday, will be back for Sunday's trip to Kilkenny.
The accuracy of Ger Farragher from frees, sideline and open play helped Galway build up a 1-13 to 0-8 interval advantage, but the midfielder did not score after the break.
Galway pulled away when Aidan Harte displayed great control to race through and blast the ball into the top corner.
After a scrappy start to the second half, Harte put Galway 1-19 to 0-13 in front after 50 minutes.
Joe Bergin, who finished with 0-4 from play, as did Brian Carroll, responded for Offaly and then sub Joe Brady's goal reduced the deficit to five points.
Offaly needed another goal to seriously threaten Galway and they were not able to grab it.
Their manager Joe Dooley lamented: "We were a bit unlucky maybe not to get a draw. We only got one point out of two 21-yard frees, but the lads kept battling."
