Dowdall goal proves crucial
Clonkill 1-13 Castletown-Geoghegan 0-14
A well-taken goal from half-time substitute Alan Dowdall in the 35th minute proved crucial as Clonkill regained the title with a two-point win over a young Castletown-Geoghegan side in Mullingar yesterday.
The new champions were made to fight all the way, having trailed by 0-8 to 0-4 at the interval to wind-assisted Castletown-Geoghegan, for Niall O'Brien was outstanding in the opening half-hour.
However, the switching of their marquee player Brendan Murtagh to midfield on the change of ends brought stability to Clonkill.
Following Alan Dowdall's goal, a three-point haul in 90 seconds midway through the second half put Clonkill on course for glory.
