Dooley on target to inspire Faithful fightback
An excellent second-half comeback helped Offaly gain an impressive first league victory of the season in Tullamore yesterday.
In a hugely entertaining game, Offaly outscored Dublin by 1-8 to 0-1 in the closing 25 minutes to secure a morale-boosting win. Before that late surge, Dublin had opened up a three-point lead early in the second half but once Offaly hit top gear, they never looked back.
Shane Dooley was marksman-in-chief for the Faithful with a tally of 2-10 but Dublin will be bitterly disappointed having come in to this game on the back of a great win over Tipperary. Indeed, when Liam Rushe found the net inside the opening two minutes, they must have thought they were on course for another league win. It didn't turn out that way as Offaly bounced back quickly and Joe Bergin goaled on four minutes.
Offaly had the advantage for most of the first half with Dooley grabbing a 22nd-minute goal but Dublin then scored seven points in a row either side of half-time. John McCaffrey scored five points from play in the first half for the Dubs as the teams went in level, 2-9 to 1-12, at half-time.
Three points from Alan McCrabbe in the opening five minutes of the second half put Dublin in a strong position. Ten minutes into the half they still held a three-point advantage but from there on it was all Offaly.
With the wind behind them, they gradually pulled away with Dublin restricted to just one point from a '65 in the final 30 minutes. Their misery was compounded when they were reduced to 14 men after 65 minutes when Maurice O'Brien received his second yellow card.
Dooley fired home his second goal after 14 minutes and he added four more from placed balls with Joe Brady, Bergin and Brian Carroll also raising white flags.
