Derry have last word
Derry 2-16 Down 3-12, Christy Ring Cup
For 20 minutes the small attendance at Owenbeg had little to cheer about as the game was very scrappy – Johnny McCusker's 10th-minute piledriver the only highlight in the opening spell that saw Down lead 1-3 to 0-3 after 20 minutes.
With Ruairi Convery converting five points from frees, Derry then had a purple patch that gave them the advantage at the break, Oisin McCloskey putting them in front with a 23rd-minute goal.
In the second half Daniel Toner netted in the 51st minute to narrow the gap (1-12 to 2-7) but goals from Shane Farren and James Coyle set up a grandstand finish.
The sides were level going into added-time and Derry's Kevin Hinphey was in the right place to take a pass from his clubmate Paddy McCloskey and fire over what proved the winning score.
