DUBLIN survived a ferocious second-half onslaught at Parnell Park yesterday to beat Kilkenny for the first time since 2003.

With only 18 players available because of injuries and colleges ties, Anthony Daly's men looked in trouble against a Kilkenny team featuring eight regulars.

But, with midfielder Conor Clinton in sensational form and Shane Ryan scoring three points from play, Dublin upset the odds to lead by 1-11 to 0-2 at the interval.

When Daire Plunkett crashed home a great goal after a Liam Ryan burst in the 46th minute, Dublin were a staggering 2-14 to 0-5 in front.

Kilkenny gained control of the game when they moved TJ Reid out the field. Helped by goals from Reid and Michael Fennelly, they were just three points behind with eight minutes left, but the Dubs dug deep into the breeze to impressively hurl their way out of trouble.

"It was a great performance overall considering we had only 18 fit players," said Daly. "I think we have the players to make the step up, it's just about getting them to have the self-belief."

Brian Cody takes every competition seriously and didn't try to hide his disappointment at the Cats losing their unbeaten start to 2011.

"Neither side was at full strength but their panel proved to be stronger than ours," he said. "Our second-half performance was decent, but the game was on for 72 or 73 minutes and for the first 35 we were not competing."
