Cooney snatches draw for NUIG
An injury-time goal from Joseph Cooney salvaged a share of the spoils for 14-man NUIG in a pulsating Group B tie at Mobhi Road.
Galway, who had Tipperary senior Seamus Hennessy dismissed in the 20th minute, trailed for the entire game until Cooney's intervention.
DIT raced into an early four-point lead as points from Liam Og McGovern and Eoin Murphy sandwiched a brace by centre-forward Michael Murphy.
NUIG rallied, with Caimin Morey in superb form, and went in front, but McGovern goaled to give his side a five-point interval lead.
The westerners took control after the restart as John Conlon helped himself to three points.
Late scores from Dublin stars Tomas Brady, Paul Ryan (2) and Peter Kelly looked to give DIT the win until that late intervention from Cooney.
But NUIG are now relying on results elsewhere while a win for DIT next time out will secure their passage.
