COLLEGES SHC

St Kieran's book their final place ST KIERAN'S 1-15; KILKENNY CBS 2-3 WITH the minimum of fuss but with absolute authority, St Kieran's College (Kilkenny) motored to their 46th victory in the Leinster Colleges SH final at Nowlan Park yesterday.

Kilkenny CBS put up gutsy opposition in this derby decider, but long before the finish the ticket into the All-Ireland final was in the hands of St Kieran's.

With Mark Heffernan, Richie Power and Sean O'Neill in fine form, the winners took the game to the opposition from the start. They opened with three unanswered scores from Power (2), and Eoin Reid.

A 12th minute goal from Mark Heffernan left the CBS 0-1 to 1-4 behind, and the scoreline accurately reflected the trend of play.

The losers were thrown a life-line in the 23rd minute, when a 40 yard shot from Mark Drennan ended up in the St Kieran's net. Although the winners reasserted their authority, they conceded a second goal, this time to John Dooley, just before the interval.

Dooley's score left Kieran's a mere 1-7 to 2-1 ahead.

The CBS poured forward in determined fashion after the break. But despite all their hard work, their only reward was a point from Eddie O'Donoghue.

St Kieran's regained the initiative when James Fitzpatrick and Sean O'Neill, a beautiful point from a 40 yard sideline cut, stretched the lead to 1-9 to 2-2.

During the break, St Kieran's took the lively Richie Power from attack and put him in goal in place of the unlucky Jim Blanchfield. Not even this switch interrupted the smooth flow of the winners' attack and they ran out easy winners.

SCORERS St Kieran's: M Heffernan 1-3, S O'Neill, J Fitzpatrick 0-3, R Power, W McCormack 0-2, E Reid, P Kennedy 0-1. Kilkenny CBS: M Drennan, J Dooley 1-0, E O'Donoghue, M O'Hara, E Guinan 0-1.
