Canning gets green light for Tribesmen
JOE CANNING has been named to start for Galway tomorrow despite fears about a shoulder injury he picked up in a challenge match against Clare last weekend, WRITES CLIONA FOLEY.
David Collins also suffered an ankle injury in the same game and is out for the next three weeks, but Canning has been included for Galway's Leinster championship opener against Westmeath in Mullingar.
The Galway management have given championship debuts to four players: goalkeeper Fergal Flannery, defenders Niall Donoghue and Paul Gordon, and centre-forward Niall Burke.
Elsewhere, Wexford footballer David Murphy has emerged as a serious doubt for their Leinster quarter-final against Longford.
Murphy was hospitalised on Thursday, reportedly for suspected blood poisoning, and it looks extremely unlikely that the Rosslare centre-back will be fit to start against Longford tomorrow.
