Canning crushes Mullagh

Portumna 11-09
Mullagh 4-07
All Ireland Hurling Sevens

Portumna of Galway were the runaway winners of the 2010 All Ireland Hurling Sevens at the Kilmacud Crokes grounds in Stillorgan on Saturday, defeating fellow countymen Mullagh in the final thanks largely to Joe Canning's eight-goal haul.

The three-time All-Ireland club champions rattled in two goals and a point in the opening couple of minutes thanks to Canning and Damien Hayes, and were never really tested thereafter.

Mullagh's Alan White pounced to net his first goal on seven minutes and Donal Reilly pointed shortly after, but Canning was scoring at will and responded with his second goal after just nine minutes, adding a free on 11 minutes. His thunderous finish just seconds later increased his side's advantage, 4-4 to 1-2.

Mullagh rallied with half-time approaching courtesy of a fine goal from Finian Coone, but you know who smashed home another to give his side a 5-04 to 2-04 lead at the break.

Portumna came flying out of the traps for the second period, netting twice in the 16th minute of play through Hayes and Canning yet again, while Reilly scored his first goal to reduce the arrears on 18.

Incredibly, Canning's sixth goal closely followed and Hayes converted from distance a minute later, yet Mullagh never gave in and White netted another goal. But prolific finishing from Canning, twice, and Hayes was enough to see the rampant Portumna win.
