Camogie: Neary and Farrell stun Wexford

Daragh o Conchuir

Kilkenny cemented their place in the semi-finals of the Liberty Insurance senior championship with a stunning 2-15 to 2-9 win over four-in-a-row-chasing Wexford at Nowlan Park.

The result sees the Noresiders complete the group stages with a 100pc record and they can look forward to a last-four bout on August 17 while the remaining eight teams thrash it out for one further semi-final spot and four quarter-final berths.

Niall Williams' Wexford team did it the hard way as they conceded a goal to Fiona Kavanagh and went four points down after four minutes. They responded well though, and were in front at half-time, 0-7 to 1-3, with Aoife Neary providing four of those points.

Kilkenny's Shelley Farrell rifled a shot to the Wexford net after 38 minutes to put six between the sides and Farrell and Neary then combined to notch the Cats' second major.

Wexford pointed through Ursula Jacob and Josie Dwyer before Kavanagh bagged her second goal in the 59th minute. Kilkenny showed impressive resolve though with late points from Ann Dalton, Neary and Katie Power to register the victory.

Wexford must face Clare next week in a do-or-die battle for a place in the quarter-finals, after Galway defeated the Banner women by 3-12 to 1-12.

Brenda Hanney gave Galway the lead with a goal midway through the opening half, but the home side were up 0-8 to 1-3 at the break.

Ann Marie Hayes struck for another Galway goal straight after the restart but Clare responded through Vera Loughnane's major. Molly Dunne then netted for Galway in the 51st minute and Emer Haverty pointed soon after as they saw the game out.
