A GOAL in the 51st minute goal from Wexford's left half-forward Ian Byrne turned this game at Dr Cullen Park as Carlow's brave effort to reach a first ever decider at this grade faltered.

Wexford appeared in trouble when substitute defender Conor Goff received a second yellow card in the 48th minute at a time when his side led by a slender 0-9 to 0-8.

But with Carlow in the ascendancy, the ball was swiftly worked downfield by Wexford and Ian Byrne's hopping shot found the home net.

Wexford turned the screw for the remainder of the game, picking off some neat points as the Carlow resistance evaporated.

The opening half had been a tight affair, with the teams going point-for-point until Marty Kavanagh gave Carlow a 0-6 to 0-5 half-time advantage with a pointed free in the third minute of injury-time.

The pace of Carlow midfielder Sean Murphy was causing all sorts of problems for Wexford, while the home half-back line of Diarmuid Byrne, Johnny Corcoran and Craig Wall was superb.

But a slight edge in cuteness was more than enough to see the Wexford men into a Leinster final meeting with Kilkenny.
