Monaghan dented Roscommon's promotion aspirations with a thoroughly deserved win at Woodmount.
The visitors were the more determined side in tough conditions and once free-taker Hugh Byrne found his range after a couple of early misses, they had the measure of a hugely disappointing home team.
Monaghan midfielder Éanna McSuibhne and Roscommon's Gerry Fallon swapped early points before Brian McGuigan edged the Farney men in front. The hosts struck for a goal when Niall Kilroy gathered Fallon's delivery and found the bottom corner.
But Monaghan hit back immediately when Tony Forde got the slightest of touches to Mark Treanor's pass from the left wing to raise a green flag and set up a 1-5 to 1-3 interval lead.
A mini-revival from the home side saw Shane Curley, Cillian Egan and Kilroy bring the sides level by the 56th minute but three more frees from Byrne and a couple of fine efforts from play by McGuigan secured the win.
