Byrne dismissal costs Monaghan
FINGAL produced a strong second-half performance to eke out a narrow but deserved win over a Monaghan team forced to play the entire second half with 14 players in Inniskeen.
Monaghan had shaded the first half thanks largely to the accuracy of Hugh Byrne from frees.
Then, almost on the stroke of half-time, Byrne was dismissed on a second yellow card and Monaghan were not only down to 14 players, but they were now also minus their chief free-taker.
Determined Fingal chipped away at Monaghan's lead as JM Sheridan delivered from frees, and David Smyth and Brian McCarthy grabbed goals.
Fingal finally made their numerical advantage count with three unanswered points in the closing eight minutes.
