Browne strike sinks Cavan

Longford 1-11
Cavan 1-9

Sean Browne's goal midway through the second half was enough for Longford to open their league campaign with a two-point victory at Michael Fay Park.

Browne's strike was the first score of a tight second period, and it gave the midlanders a three-point advantage -- the sides had been level at 0-7 to 1-4 at the interval.

The free-taking accuracy of Bernard Gaffney kept Cavan in contention throughout: the centre-forward finished with an impressive tally of 1-7, all from placed balls.

Declan Tanner, though, was in similarly lethal form for the home side, the Offaly native contributing 0-8 from full-forward.

His scores ensured that Longford were able to keep their visitors at arm's length and hang on for victory.
