Boy wonder Canning needs a break

I wonder what Joe Canning and Cu Chulainn talk about when they meet. The old days?

Well, they were contemporaries so it's a good place to start.

What? Canning isn't that old? Are you sure? Right, it only looks that way.

Canning has been illuminating the hurling world for so long now that it's almost impossible to believe that he celebrated his 22nd birthday last week.

Now, neither Joe nor Portumna will agree that their defeat by Loughrea in the Galway semi-final had any upside, but it had, certainly for Canning.

At long last, he will have a winter off, which will do him good.

His schedule with Galway and Portumna at various grades -- as well as Limerick IT -- over the last five years has been so ridiculously busy that he hasn't had time to give body or mind a decent rest.

Joe, put the hurley under the stairs and enjoy the break.

You'll be the better for it. After all, it's not as if you don't have time on your side.
