Joe Canning looks set to miss the majority of Galway's group league matches after damaging the AC joint in his shoulder yesterday.

Canning will see a specialist later today to determine the extent of the damage caused by a collision with GMIT's Conor Forde while playing for Limerick IT in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final in Limerick yesterday.

The initial prognosis puts him out of action for up to six weeks, which will preclude him from games against Dublin, Tipperary and Cork at least, with the prospect of missing the game against Waterford too. His best hope is to return for the final group game against Kilkenny.

It is a bad blow for Canning, who has looked in superb shape after completing an extensive pre-season.

Limerick IT won the game to qualify for the play-offs but without Canning, Davy Fitzgerald's side will surely struggle.

The Portumna man was involved in the collision after 22 minutes but managed to play on until the second half and scored a total of 1-8.

Canning has had an indifferent couple of seasons with Galway but was looking forward to the league with renewed optimism.
