Bergin frees hold off goal-hungry UUJ

St Pats-Mater Dei 0-23
UUJ 4-9

St Pats-Mater Dei produced a late rally to secure a hard-earned win over UUJ in Drumcondra yesterday.

Antrim's Neil McManus led the charge for UUJ with 2-5, but the superb free-taking of Kilkenny's Mark Bergin (0-10) edged the hosts to victory.

The sides were tied on three occasions in the opening half and were level at the break at 2-4 to 0-10.

The presence of former Antrim boss Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton on the sideline as a stand-in manager was an indicator of how seriously UUJ took this game, and they started strongly.

McManus netted their first goal within a minute of the throw-in, but with Bergin and Brendan Timmons in fine form, St Pats refused to let the visitors get away.

Pats forged two points ahead within five minutes of the restart, but Darren Hamill's 36th-minute goal sprung UUJ back to life. A second McManus goal tied the game at 4-7 to 0-19 with eight minutes remaining, but St Pats stood firm and some late Bergin scores paved the way to victory.
