Barron helps Deise bridge 52-year gap

Waterford 0-15 Kilkenny 0-9

Waterford ended a 52-year Kilkenny hoodoo at Walsh Park to set up a semi-final date with Dublin.

The Decies, who had not beaten their illustrious neighbours in a championship match at any level since the 1959 All-Ireland senior final replay, fell behind to an early free from Kevin Kelly.

However, boosted by great displays from Jamie Barron and Darren Foley, they were soon ahead by 0-5 to 0-1.

Kelly was by far Kilkenny's most influential player, and two frees from him brought Kilkenny back into the game, but as the game neared the interval, Waterford kicked on again and points from Jake Dillon (two), Donal Breathnach and Gavin O'Brien helped them into a half-time lead of 0-9 to 0-4.

The weight of history appeared to burden the Deise early in the second half and for five minutes, the ball did not leave the hosts' half. However, Kilkenny could only add two points in that period as the Waterford defence held firm, with Man of the Match Barron outstanding.

The turning point came in the 11th minute of the half when, with Waterford leading by three points, Chris Bolger's 21-yard free was kept out.

Waterford surged ahead again in the final quarter and four points between the 47th and 50th minutes broke Kilkenny's resilience and the large home attendance in a crowd of 3,780 could breathe more easily.
