Ahern strikes early to spark rout ahead of busy schedule for UCC
UCC 3-28 Mary Immaculate, Llimerick 2-14
A potent full-forward line helped UCC advance without too much obstruction in the Waterford Crystal Cup at the Mardyke.
Jack Ahern's 10th-minute goal put the hosts 1-5 to 0-3 ahead and from there they drove on.
Ahern finished with 1-4, while his partners up top, Conor Lehane and Willie Griffin, each managed 1-6. Lehane's goal made it 2-10 to 0-4 by the 18th minute.
When Griffin added the third goal, the advantage was 3-14 to 0-5 and by half-time they led by 20 points.
With a raft of changes after half-time, though, it was inevitable that the tempo dropped and Mary I managed to augment their tally.
Jamie Wall and Niall O'Meara got late goals, but those scores and points from Paul Hayes and Jamie Moloney were never going to affect the outcome.
On Saturday, UCC take on Cork in the Canon O'Brien Cup, while on Sunday they travel to face Clare.
