Workforce in fine form on return

Derby hero Workforce made the perfect start to his four-year-old career with victory in last night's Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown.

Racing on rain-softened ground, Ryan Moore was happy to sit off what looked a stiff pace set by the enterprisingly ridden Poet.

Poet still held an advantage two out and while Workforce soon picked him up when asked, with Moore using his stick up just once, he had to battle fairly hard to finally get the better of the argument by a length at the line, the pair 11 lengths clear of Aidan O'Brien's Jan Vermeer in third.

Pyman's Theory (12/1) trained by the in-form Tom Dascombe and part-owned by Manchester United's Michael Owen, made every yard to record an impressive success in the National Stakes.

Magic City was sent off the 10/11 favourite, but the Richard Hannon-trained colt had no answer when Pyman's Theory quickened.

Blue Bajan (4/1) confirmed his new lease of life as he claimed the Charles Heidsieck Champagne Henry II Stakes. The nine-year-old was giving up-and-coming trainer David O'Meara, as well as rider Danny Tudhope, their biggest career successes.
