The well-backed Western Victory (11/4) was the hero of the hour on the first day of Galway's September meeting with Declan Queally's charge leading from flag fall in the mares hurdle to bring up a double for Seán O'Keeffe.

Willie Mullins' Great White Shark was sent to post the 4/6 favourite but she finished third and was no match for Western Victory, which coasted home by 11 lengths on her first start for the Waterford trainer.

"That was a very good performance and Seán's seven pounds helped in that ground. She'll probably get a hike for that so we'll see what the handicapper does but there's a Listed mares' hurdle at Gowran in two weeks," the trainer's son and namesake Declan said.

Talented Wexford jockey O'Keeffe had earlier been on the mark when landing the opening maiden hurdle with a fine ride aboard Barry Murphy's Pakens Rock (5/2).
