Watching brief

HAVING won a Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas trial for Pat Fahy last year, Ballybacka Lady's potential was already established, and she confirmed herself one to keep on the right side of with an excellent re-appearance at the Foxrock venue on Thursday.

Making her first start for Jessica Harrington since being sold, she quickened well from off the pace to chase Famous Name home in the Meld Stakes, finishing ahead of three superior-rated horses.

That followed a similarly gallant effort from the front in the Group One Matron Stakes on her final start last term.

Given that Ballybacka Lady is now in-foal -- which often prompts enhanced performances -- Harrington can be expected to place her to good effect in the coming weeks.
