Watching brief

Society Rock was the hard luck story of the week at Royal Ascot, sitting in the stalls as Black Caviar and Co quickly made away in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

James Fanshawe's colt, second and first in the race in the previous two years, eventually flew home from a hopeless position for fifth, beaten just two lengths, which was far less than he got left at the gate.

While there is a temptation to draw a line through him in light of similar incidents in the past, he remains one of the best sprinters around, so 10/1 about him getting it together in the July Cup is not to be sniffed at.

In a fortnight's time at Newmarket, there will be no Black Caviar, and you can be sure Fanshawe will have done plenty to remedy Society Rock's tardy start.
