Watching brief

Moiqen has never fulfilled the promise of his 2008 Ballysax Stakes triumph for Kevin Prendergast, but he posted his most encouraging effort for a long time when third to Passage Vendome at Punchestown last Wednesday.

On his debut outing for rookie Birr-based handler Philip Byrne, the Red Ransom gelding was beaten less than five lengths behind the two market leaders, staying on strongly to nick third on the line.

It was the first time in five hurdle outings that Moiqen had shown anything of his ability and strongly hinted that he might finally be recapturing some of his sparkle. He will be worth a second look wherever he turns up next.
