Turf war can conquer all

The final meeting of the year at Roscommon today serves up an eight-race card providing opportunities in equal measure between the Flat and the jumps WRITES Damien McElroy.

The 150th anniversary fixture last month marked the comeback after injury of champion jockey Ruby Walsh. Out of luck on that occasion, the Kildare pilot has wasted no time since in resuming his quest for another title and could also be on the mark today with Turf War, which is napped to capture the Kilbegnet Novice Chase.

However, top weight Beau Michael will also relish the easy conditions underfoot and Salesin has been enjoying a purple patch.

The All Creatures Veterinary Novice Hurdle is the next most interesting event of the session for future reference on the jumping front and Noel Meade's Dark Prospect will be fancied to augment last month's Galway success.

The Charlie Swan-David Casey partnership could find more success at this venue in the concluding Four Roads Maiden Hurdle with 122-rated seasonal debutant Start Me Up.

The Athlone Handicap looks the most competitive of the meeting's four Flat races but preference is for Miranda's Girl, which is well-known by Roscommon regulars.
