Tributes flow for larger-than-life Casey
One of the most important people in Andrew Lynch's riding career has been trainer Peter Casey and the Meath jockey led the tributes after Casey sadly passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning aged 82.
Having ridden star chaser Flemenstar to all ten of his wins under rules - including his three Grade One Novice Chase wins when in Casey's care - the pair were indelibly linked with Lynch describing how the Meath handler struck a blow for small trainers everywhere.
"He did remarkably well for a small-time trainer against the big boys. He was brilliant for my career as he gave me the ride on Flemenstar, who gave me so many memorable days. He was a brilliant jumper and a brilliant horse," Lynch said. "Peter was a character and you always knew coming back into the winner's enclosure after a race there was a big reception waiting for you. He was a decent man who was always very decent to me."
Casey gained national notoriety for his post-race comments following Flemenstar's 19-length romp in the Arkle Novice Chase at Leopardstown in January 2012, much to the shock of RTÉ presenter Tracy Piggott.
In a live interview Casey declared: "Jesus unreal, I can't believe it. I'll have f****** sex tonight and everything, I'm going away for a week." The hilarious clip quickly went viral online and making him an overnight YouTube sensation.
Lifelong friend and Irish racecourse commentator Dessie Scahill described Casey as a "great character" - one unlikely to be seen again - and believes that racing has unfortunately said goodbye to one of the few personalities left in the game.
