Thyestes in cash boost

Long-established premium horse feed manufacturers Connolly's Red Mills have increased their Irish sponsorship portfolio by becoming the latest backers of Gowran Park's historic Thyestes Chase, staged not far from the family firm's traditional Goresbridge base.

The €90,000 three-mile contest, for which there are currently 55 entries, should prove as popular as ever at the Kilkenny venue on Thursday, January 20 when Conna-based Jimmy Mangan's Whinstone Boy will attempt to repeat last year's victory.

The legendary Arkle and Brown Lad stand out among the late Tom Dreaper's Thyestes winners, and both Hedgehunter for Willie Mullins in 2004 and Numbersixvalverde 12 months later from Martin Brassil's yard scored en route to Aintree Grand National glory.
