Russell lands tasty treble

Davy Russell underlined his skills by landing a juicy 239/1 treble at Gowran Park yesterday.

He got off the mark in the Gigginstown House Stud colours on the Dessie Hughes-trained Instinctive (9/1) in the Freshford Handicap Hurdle. Russell brought the six-year-old on the outside to make his challenge at the second last to see off Duartin. "He'll go out now until next season when he'll go chasing," said Hughes.

Russell had to fight off the challenges of the Willie Mullins-trained pair of Glenlo Abbey and Angus House to get 2/1 favourite Playboy Luke, trained by Brian Hamilton, home by a head in the Dungarvan Maiden Hurdle.

Russell completed his hat-trick when Meadows Thyne landed the Thomastown Handicap Hurdle by a length from Caffeine Craze.

Champion trainer Mullins struck with a double in the first two races courtesy of Cadspeed and Pozyc.

Cadspeed (9/4), ridden by the trainer's son Patrick, beat Gates Of Rome by four lengths after a prolonged duel in the Mullinavat Hurdle. Pozyc, the evens favourite, had a hard-fought win under Paul Townend in the Inistioge Maiden Hurdle, scoring by a length and a half from Take A Stroll.

"He made nice progress from his first run over hurdles at Clonmel. We'll mix it in the summer with him. He's still a maiden on the Flat," said Mullins.

Robbie Molloy brought Carlowsantana with a well-timed run to justify favouritism in the Goresbridge Handicap Hurdle. The 7/2 shot swept to a four-length call over Luca Brasi.
