Ruby hails 'natural' Carberry
Ruby Walsh has led the tributes to his weighing-room colleague Paul Carberry who confirmed his retirement yesterday due to persistent injury.
The Grand National-winning rider called time on his distinguished career due to an ongoing issue with a leg injury. The 42-year-old had not ridden competitively since he fractured his left femur in a fall at Listowel last September.
Carberry was regarded as a supreme stylist by his peers and Walsh told the Irish Independent: "He was just natural. Horses settled, jumped and then ran for him without Paul ever seeming to do much. He found riding so easy and race riding, wherever it was, never fazed him.
"He was very tough but extremely fair, a gentleman to sit beside and a legend to have as a friend.
"I find it a bit sad to think I will never ride head to head against him again. A hero of mine, I don't think I'll ever ride against his like again."
