Paul Townend looks certain to become the new Irish champion jumps jockey after his nearest rival Davy Russell fractured his wrist in a fall at Thurles yesterday.

Russell, who had earlier rode a winner at the Co Tipperary track, faces a minimum of two weeks on the sidelines after his fall from Academy Rose left him with a hairline fracture to a metacarpal bone in his left hand.

The Youghal native now faces a race against time to be fit to ride the much-fancied Becauseicouldntsee in the Aintree Grand National tomorrow fortnight.
